Program Components
- School-Based Events - Safe Kids coalitions and FedEx Express employees across the country escort children to or from school and teach them safe pedestrian behaviors annually on International Walk to School Day. The school-based events also draw local media attention.
- Data Collection – Safe Kids coalitions and FedEx Express representatives conduct speed surveys, environmental assessments and observational studies to unveil the problems for child pedestrians along school routes. This research supports the need for future pedestrian safety activities.
- School Safety Committees – Safe Kids coalitions and FedEx Express join concerned school administrators, parents and other advocates to create a school pedestrian safety committee that works throughout the academic year to reinforce safe pedestrian behaviors to the children, as well as enforce traffic laws in the school zone and pursue needed changes to the pedestrian environment.
- Community Pedestrian Safety Task Forces – With an additional grant offered through the Safe Kids Walk This Way program, coalitions and FedEx Express employees partner with traffic safety engineers, city planning officials and others to address the environmental hazards for pedestrians in a high pedestrian injury risk location. The task force works to identify problems and advocate for traffic-calming solutions including installing new signage, restriping crosswalks, building pedestrian refuge islands or medians, etc.
